In Depth Discussion (Red 2)

Today is the first class in our new four-class set. We will begin with our editing exercise. Today's reading is about immigration to Korea. Our listening material is Episode 2 Part 3 of Serial. The vocabulary words will come from the reading. I will explain them in class. I also underlined some phrases that I thought were interesting, perhaps you could ask questions about them in class. Please answer the listening questions. 

Vocabulary

  • diaspora- (noun) the dispersion of any people from their original homeland.
  • amnesty- (noun) an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offenses. (verb) grant an official pardon to.
  • allocation- (noun) the action or process of allocating or distributing something. ALSO an amount or portion of a resource assigned to a particular recipient.
  • demographic- (adj) relating to the structure of populations. (noun) a particular sector of a population.

  • I want to get back with you- This is what we say when we want to start a romantic relationship again.
  • Mutual- same feeling
  • Teenage angst- the negative emotions teenagers feel
  • Dispell that- to debunk or disprove something
  • I don’t buy the motive- I don't believe it
  • Conjure up a murderous rage- building up or gathering enough anger to kill someone
  • Spur of the moment- suddenly
  • Slap in the face- insulting and it makes you look stupid
  • Fabricated a reason to get into her car- make up a story or an excuse to get in her car
  • Concession stand- a place to buy snacks, like chips and soda
  • Ramped up- building up, increasing in intensity
