Independent Study 12

Today is the third class in our current four-class set. Today's reading is about an employee who was disciplined at work. The vocabulary words will come from the reading. I will explain and discuss them in class. Our listening material is a nature video clip. Please listen for the keywords and phrases. 

Vocabulary

  • reprimanded - (noun) an act or expression of criticism and censure
  • ridicule - (noun) the subjection of someone or something to contemptuous and dismissive language or behavior. (verb) subject (someone or something) to contemptuous and dismissive language or behavior.
  • relentless - (adj) oppressively constant; incessant. harsh or inflexible.
  • controversial - (adj) giving rise or likely to give rise to public disagreement.

Key Words and Phrases

  • hardened travelers- anyone who is hardened is tough. If you travel a lot and can endure a lot you are hardened. 
  • harem of females- a harem is a group of wives
  • what he lacks in looks he makes up in brawn- the beach master elephant seal is ugly but strong. 
  • continue to hold the fort- this means protecting one's territory.
