Today is the second class in our new four-class set. We will begin class with our editing exercise. Our reading today is about fashion. The vocabulary words will come from our reading. Please be able to identify them in class. Our listening material will be Episode 3 Part 1.

Vocabulary

  • couture - (noun) the design and manufacture of fashionable clothes to a client's specific requirements and measurements.
  • utilitarian - (adj) designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive. ALSO relating to or adhering to the doctrine of utilitarianism- the doctrine that an action is right insofar as it promotes happiness, and that the greatest happiness of the greatest number should be the guiding principle of conduct.
  • primordial - (adj) existing at or from the beginning of time; primeval. ALSO (especially of a state or quality) basic and fundamental.
  • bastion - (noun) a projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall, so as to allow defensive fire in several directions. an institution, place, or person strongly defending or upholding particular principles, attitudes, or activities.

Key Words and Phrases

  • The case had been adjudicated- This is a fancy way of saying there was a judgment made on the case, thereby ending the case. 
  • And it's inconclusive- There is no formal answer. It is still a mystery. 
  • Off-kilter story- The story is a little strange and is not logical
  • Law abiding Baltimoreans- people from Baltimore Maryland that follow the law.
  • Got the plane from his basement- A plane is a woodworking tool that shaves the wood to make it smooth and flat. 
  • Sustenance- something that provides energy, food. 
  • Weakness in the narrative- A narrative is a story, so the story is weak. 
  • Things are fishy- This means that there is doubt. Something is not quite right, questionable.
