Today is the first class in our new four-class set. We will begin class with a collocation exercise. Our reading today is about treasure hunting. The vocabulary words will come from our reading. Please be able to identify them in class. Our listening material will be Episode 4 Part 2.
Vocabulary
- encrust- (verb) cover (something) with a hard surface layer.
- decimate - (verb) kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of. drastically reduce the strength or effectiveness of (something).
- subsequently - (adverb) after a particular thing has happened; afterward.
- bullion - (noun) gold or silver in bulk before coining, or valued by weight.

Key Words and Phrases
- Stop playing dumb- this means to stop pretending like you don't know what is going on.
- Bad mouthed- this means to talk bad or insult someone, usually behind their back.
- Kicking it per se- to kick it means to hang out. Per se is a similar phrase to 'such as.' What Adnan is trying to say is that when they met the would smoke marijuana together, but they didn't meet regularly.
- gnawing at Jay- gnaw means to chew. For example, dogs gnaw on bones. But this phrase means that Jay was thinking about something- chewing an idea in his mind over and over.
- Caught up in the situation- to get involved in something.
- Rap sheet- this is your criminal record
- The mother of Jay’s inconsistencies- the biggest of Jay's inconsistencies.
- They are not suckers- they do not believe everything they hear.
- Big swathes of his story had changed- large parts of the story changed.
- Investigate and corroborate- research, study, and confirm.
