Independent Study 10

Today is the first class in our new four-class set. We will begin class with a vocabulary exercise. Our reading today is about treasure hunting. The vocabulary words will come from our reading. Please be able to identify them in class. Our listening material will be Episode 3 Part 2. We will not have class on August 2nd. I will see you again on August 9th.

Vocabulary

  • encrust- (verb) cover (something) with a hard surface layer. 
  • decimate - (verb) kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of. drastically reduce the strength or effectiveness of (something).
  • subsequently - (adverb) after a particular thing has happened; afterward.
  • bullion - (noun) gold or silver in bulk before coining, or valued by weight.

Key Words and Phrases

  • So I wouldn’t stumble- trip and fall
  • Brambles and trees- brambles are bushes with thorns
  • At dusk, I think it is- dusk is the time before sunset. 
  • Paced it out by the yard- this means to measure an area by walking and counting your steps.
  • It dawns on all of us- we all suddenly realize
  • Keep you warm, keep you warm- sometimes alcoholics use this as an excuse to drink- just to keep warm. 
  • A streaker- someone who runs in public with no clothes on. 
  • Riding back to work in his altogether- naked
  • Polygraph test- a lie detector test
  • Suspicions about Adnan start to percolate - we often use the word percolate to describe preparing coffee. But we can use it here as a metaphor. It means that suspicions about Adnan start to grow stronger.
