Independent Study 10

Today is the third class in our current four class set. We will begin with our collocation exercise. Our reading this week is about how WWI changed the world we live in today.

Our listening material is about fortune telling. I have included a transcript, but please listen too. We will have an analytical writing question. You need to find the argument and three points that refute the argument.

Writing Question: The recent surge in violence in the southern part of the city is a result of a shortage of police officers and an absence of leadership on the part of the city council. In order to rectify the burgeoning growth of crime that threatens the community, the city council must address this issue seriously. Instead of spending time on peripheral issues such as education quality, community vitality, and job opportunity, the city council must realize that the crime issue is serious and double the police force, even if this action requires budget cuts from other city programs.

  1. find the argument

  2. restate the argument

  3. write 3 sentences supporting or against the argument

  4. write a conclusion.

Click HERE for the reading- find two words to bring to class from the reading. These words can be words you don’t know or ones that you find interesting.
