Today is the third class in our current four-class set. We will begin class with our Latin roots.
The phrase of the week is, "bastard child." This is a very crude term and usually refers to a child from unmarried parents. In our reading, it is used a metaphor for a cultural byproduct. For example, "Banh mi is the bastard child of French and Viet cuisine; an intriguing combination that came about when the French colonized Vietnam."
Today's reading is about tortillas and our listening material is about Johnny Cash and how he revived his career. Please be able to describe the vocabulary words.
Vocabulary
- inmate- (noun) a person confined to an institution such as a prison or hospital.
- captive audience- (noun) a group of people who must listen to what someone is saying because they cannot leave.
- rebellious- (adj) showing a desire to resist authority, control, or convention. OR (of a person, city, or state) engaged in opposition or armed resistance to an established government or ruler. OR (of a thing) not easily handled or kept in place.
- penitentiary- (noun) a prison for people convicted of serious crimes.
