Independent Study 10

Today is the second class in our current four-class set. The phrase of the week is, "get to the point." We use this phrase to tell someone not to waste time talking about things that don't matter. For example, "I need you to get to the point, I don't have all day." As you can see it is not the most polite phrase.

The reading today is about how to write better emails. Our listening material is the worst advice Tim Ferriss has ever received. We will do another extended listen and write, so please practice with the audio recording. Please be able to describe the vocabulary words.

Vocabulary

  • safety-school- A safety school is a college that you're almost guaranteed to get into. Your GPA should be well above the average student's at that school and your SAT or ACT score should be above the 75th percentile for that school.
  • demoralized- (adj) having lost confidence or hope; disheartened.
  • paraphrase- (verb) express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity.
