In Depth Discussion

Welcome back! I hope you had a restful and productive holiday. Today is the first class in our new four-class set. We will begin class with our Latin root words.

The phrase of the week is, "initial inclination." This is a nice example of alliteration- when words have the same initial consonant first sound. We use this phrase to describe our first thought or reaction to something. For example, "After hearing it was going to snow, my initial inclination was to go skiing."

Today's reading is about Overwatch, a popular game that your children might be playing. Our listening material is about the coral reefs of Guam and how to restore them with IVF. Please be able to describe the vocabulary words.

Vocabulary

  • divvy- (verb) divide up and share.
  • bleach- (verb) whiten by exposure to sunlight or by a chemical process.
  • colony- (noun) a group of people of one nationality or ethnic group living in a foreign city or country. OR a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country.
  • larva- (noun) plural- larvae- the active immature form of an insect, especially one that differs greatly from the adult and forms the stage between egg and pupa, e.g., a caterpillar or grub
