In Depth Discussion (Red 2)

Today is the final class of our current four class set. It is also the the last class before our 추석 holiday. ERT will be closed from September 21st through October 3rd.

Our reading material is about how much pressure is put on Korean women during the holiday season. We talked about this a little bit last week, but I want to hear the details from you.

Our listening material points out some bad speaking habits and the use of the word "so". We tend to use this word when we do not have an immediate response. I might be guilty of using "so" too much.

Idioms

  • "get something off your chest" to make known something that is bothersome, angering, or irritating, but kept secret for a time. Ex. Something is bothering me, and I want to get it off my chest. Please don't smoke here.
  • "sitting pretty" to be in a lucky, superior, or advantageous position. Ex. He got a promotion at work and now he's sitting pretty.
  • "jump off the deep end" to act emotionally without carefully thinking about the end result; to become deeply involved before your're ready to. Ex. Ed and Esther just met, but they're getting married. They're jumping off the deep end.
  • "in the same boat" in the same bad situation; sharing the same problem or difficulty. Ex. Look, we're all in the same boat, and we've got to work together.

Vocabulary

  • Endemic
  • Keen
  • Indignation
  • Fixation
